"My car wouldn't start so I called AAA and they sent out a tow truck driver. The tow truck driver couldn't figure out why my car wasn't starting so he recommended he tow my car to Mastercraft. Once I went to Mastercraft I wasn't really excited to sign a paper that was going to charge me $110 just for them to do a diagnosis. I knew my car had nothing serious since I just got everything checked 2 weeks ago from my local, trustworthy mechanic in Los Angeles. I had to leave my car overnight and the worker let me know he would have an answer for me by noon the next day. The next day at 9:37 AM I called Mastercraft and inquired about my car and the employee told me that no one had begun to even look at my car, but someone was very soon. At 11:24 AM, I got a call from a Mastercraft employee saying that they haven't been able to even begin a proper diagnosis because the key was not reading the ignition. So he asked me if I could bring over my spare key to the shop since he thought this would help start the diagnosis process. Once I had to get a ride back to the shop and search for me key, I brought it to the worker. He said this might be the solution. I saw my car, in the exact same spot it was where I left it in a parking space but now it was surrounded by other cars, it wasn't in the shop. He put the spare key in the ignition and the car started! Problem solved!! I wanted to drive away there and thank him. But he told me the car had to stay there until 2 since the tech took a part the whole car and he was on lunch break. So disappointed, I left car-less. 2pm rolled around but still no answer. At 4:24 I finally hear from Mastercraft saying my car is ready for pick up. Honestly I don't know what took so long, I was honestly expecting since I had to wait so long that Maybe my car was getting a complimentary car wash or that I was going to have no charges. Really Mastercraft did absolutely nothing but tell me that I needed a new key. They performed no safety check or did anything additional than using my spare key that I br"

"This was a tough situation for both myself and Seth but the end result left me feeling very satisfied, and likely to remain a customer for life. Thats really all you need to know but here are the details if you like. Mastercraft had just replaced my blownout engine in my Syncro with a used one from the junk yard in order to try to get the job done as inexpensively as possible. Subaru's being pretty reliable I went with the recommendation. Unfortunately even though the used engine was inspected and deemed to be a good option. We were unable to see that if was burning oil at the rate of a quart every 150 miles until my Oil Pressure light lit up. I did catch in time but putting two quarts of oil in with every fill up was not sitting well with me. Especially after spending $3000 on the job. With the market on good used engines pretty scarce, we made the decision to go with a rebuild. I paid the difference in cost between the two engines and Mastercraft reinstalled everything at no charge. It ended up costing me more in the long run but it was worth it. A big thank you to Seth, Sam, and the crew at Mastercraft for making it happen and standing behind their work."

Based on what she told me, and the high miles, I suspected a blown head gasket (=big bucks). I did a lot of research on shops, since we reside in Northern California (I'm retired law enforcement x 30 years and know there are less than honest people out there). I directed my daughter to have the Suburban towed to Mastercraft. I was immediately contacted by "Sam." I told him my concerns based on the description provided by my daughter. Sam's comment was "No worries, we'll get to the bottom of it for you." A day later Sam called to explain the recently replaced upper and lower radiator hoses were never clamped down properly and all the fluid leaked out. Sam said, "Everything is taken care of. Have your daughter pick it up." Amazing. The faulty work was done by a shop here in Nor Cal that we've been going to for years (New employee - now terminated. Full refund to us). This is my point. Mastercraft could have easily done repairs that were not necessary and charged me hundreds of dollars, and I would not have realized it. This is an honest shop. I was updated at the end of each day by the service manager, Sam. This shop gets a well earned 5 stars. Thank you for your honesty. "Here is the bottom line. I have been with Seth since the good old days of H&R. I do consider him to be an honest mechanic that does quality work. But it seems that with the overhead on the new shop has raise prices considerably. Especially the mark up on product. For instance a $15.00 Gallon of Anti Freeze for 29.95? One of the original selling points of the Subaru conversion was the fact that the jdm engines were readily available. I understand that the market dried up but to end up with a used engine from a junkyard with a 126k on it for $3000 seems like a bummer. Especially after hearing I could have had a complete rebuild for $4000 when I picked it up. I don't understand why that was not laid out as an option originally as I would and probably gone that direction. I hope that it used one works out but when you are looking at $3000 or $4000 its not much difference. Especially when I had to borrow the money anyway. Originally upon dropping it off we were looking at about a $2000 scenario on a used engine replacement which is why that was the direction I was looking. Anyway.. maybe sour grapes on my parts. but I know have over 11k into the subaru conversion so yeah kind of a bummer. That said, Seth still is the guy to go to for all your syncro needs in this region for sure. Though in his own words he sold out to concentrate on newer cars.. I would much rather take my Van to his old shop H&R where they dealt pretty much exclusively with VW and Syncros."
